The next thing you need to do to use a video marketing strategy wisely is to create a measurable KPI for your campaign. You can’t reach your goals if you don’t know what they are. As with other marketing strategies, it’s important to do some A/B testing to learn what works best for your audience.
The goal for most businesses on YouTube is to monetize through soft-selling and lead generation, not actual pay-per-video-view ads. Focus on this strategy, which we’ve discussed how to do in other sections, and you’ll make much more profit from YouTube than by running ads on your videos.
When you ask your friends which online video platform they use, the answer you probably receive is YouTube. For good reason too! YouTube is the largest video hosting platform, the second largest search platform after Google, and the third most visited website in the world. Every day people watch over 5 billion videos a day on YouTube. To top it off, it’s free to upload your videos to YouTube and optimize them for search.
Before launching any marketing campaign, it’s important to determine your primary video goals. Your goal could be to increase brand awareness, engagement, or even conversions for a free trial! However, it’s crucial to pick out just one or two goals for each video. When you have more, your video will seem unfocused, which makes it difficult for viewers to determine what they should do next.
iMovie is Apple’s video editing software. Compatible with Macs and other iOS devices, iMovie is simple, user-friendly, and free on all Apple products. iMovie allows you to create and edit your videos by cutting together clips, adding titles, music, sound effects, basic color correction, filters, and special effects. The program even provides helpful templates that make editing a breeze. The platform supports high quality clips like 4K video footage and makes it easy to share your work directly to a video hosting platform. While a lack of access to advanced color correction and editing features mean that it isn’t commonly used by professionals, iMovie is a great option if you’re just starting out.
First up, frame rate and resolution. As with most things in video, there are a bunch of customization options. But for now, know that the main choice you have is between shooting your video at 24 frames per second (fps) or 30fps. Video experts often credit 24fps with a more “cinematic” look, while 30fps is considered more common, especially for videos that need to be projected or broadcasted. Rule of thumb: Ask whoever will use the file in the end and shoot based on their preferences. Then, be sure your resolution is at least 1920 x 1080 to maintain quality footage.
YouTube is one of the largest, most visited websites in the world. Fortunately, and it’s also one of the easiest places to get massive amounts of traffic with minimal effort. By utilizing these best practices, you can now create engaging videos, dominate SEO, and send your videos surging up the search rankings on both YouTube and Google.
You guessed it right; the biggest influential factor that launched this form of marketing was YouTube. Of course, there were other websites that offer video upload and streaming features but they weren’t as strong as YouTube.
One simple way to create a steady stream of content is to produce shorter versions of long-form content. Build a theme around a topic and then post bite-size versions of the theme on a weekly basis. This will keep your audience engaged and coming back for more.
Ad groups will each be assigned a format (either in-stream or video discovery for TrueView campaigns), and can contain only ads of that same format. For example, an in-stream ad group can contain only in-stream video ads and their associated targeting criteria and bids. Likewise, a video discovery ad group can contain only video discovery ads and their associated targeting criteria and bids.
This whole idea behind “all you need is a webcam” is pretty much garbage. Don’t believe me, when was the last time you watched someone’s webcam video for extended periods of time? To be fair, it’s sometimes true that a webcam is all you need, but only if you have an engaging video personality. And let’s face it, being good on video is not a skill that most people are born with.
There are many options for editing tools and software. Depending on your operating system, your computer may come with free editing software such as iMovie or Windows Movie Maker. These programs provide basic editing tools, like the ability to cut clips together, add titles, and add limited effects and color correction. There are also higher end, more expensive options such as Final Cut Pro X or Adobe Premier CC, which offer an array of editing tools. YouTube even has its own online editing platform you can use to compile your clips and edit together your video.
The part in italics is what will show as the title on YouTube. You see that I leave a cliffhanger that will make people want to click. I also put in the keywords search engine optimization and SEO in there to make it clear what the video is about. I’d then put the Google logo in the thumbnail to catch the eye and make sure people know it’s about Google SEO.
Video blogs are daily or weekly videos documenting daily life or events. You could also record a video that gives an overview and the most important tips from a blog post so your audience has multiple ways to digest the content.
The YouTube/Adwords ad creator looks a little different than what Facebook/Pinterest/Twitter/Quora ads managers look like. They display all four creation steps on a page, and you click on each in order to add and edit the content there. First, select your video.
For instance, as the person behind the camera, you may believe you collect ample footage and ask all the right interview questions. But to the editor, you may actually be shooting too much of one type of shot and missing out on some that would make their job a lot easier.
Your videos should work the same way. Even if they aren’t ads, you should treat it them as such. Hook the viewer in with visuals and a few great opening lines. Then keep them entertained. Watch what I do in this video:
When it comes to online video views, gaming is one of the most popular topics ever. Such is the popularity of user-generated content, all of the top 10 gaming franchises earn the majority of their views via Influencers, not via official branded videos. …
Wistia is a video platform built specifically for businesses. Unlike other video hosting platforms, Wistia helps drive traffic back your website instead of back to its site. This is extremely helpful if your goal is to get the viewer to complete an action on your website.
If you want to bid more aggressively on folks who visited an important page (such as your “contact us” page), then create a special audience for those visitors, and boost your bids by setting up a different campaign aimed at these people.
Annotations are text overlays that you can place over your videos. With annotations, you can layer text, links, and hotspots over your video to enrich the video experience with additional information, interactivity, and engagement.
Your prospects want to know that your product will solve their specific problem, and one of the best ways to showcase this and build trust is by creating case study videos that feature your happy and loyal customers. These are your best advocates. Get them on-camera describing their challenges and how your company helped them meet their goals.
I highly recommend adding both YouTube cards and captions to all of your videos. This will make the videos more accessible and actionable. Both only take a few extra minutes, and are well worth the investment.
Note: Your video campaigns are located with your other campaign types (if any) from the “All campaigns” drop-down menu. You can also use this drop-down menu to view only video campaigns by selecting Video campaigns.
Overall, Wistia is great for businesses who are looking to pay for a fully customizable, premium experience. However, Wistia is not a video discovery platform. If you’re creating a large brand campaign and are hoping to increase conversations about your content, this might not be the best platform for you.
Social Sharing and Comments: If you’re on social media, you’re probably familiar with sharing and commenting. Social shares and comments are good indicators of how relevant your content is with your target audience. If a viewer watches your video and takes the time to share it with their network, you probably created a great piece of content. Social shares are also important because the more times your video is shared, the more it’ll be viewed. If your goal is to reach to reach a lot of people, social shares is good metric to track.
Keywords are the other important thing. You need to make sure you put those keywords in your title so it attracts the right audience. Keywords like social media marketing, search engine optimization, conversion rate optimization, ROI, and blogging are all keywords you’ll find me using. If you know your niche, you’ll know what keywords you need to use.
Tell them what’s in it for them – Immediately after your brief intro, you need to explain 2 things: WHY they should watch AND how long the video is going to run (most people don’t like open-ended commitments).
Remember that video doesn’t need to be complicated. In fact, some of the most popular video campaigns in the world are extremely simple — and their power rests in their simplicity. It’s more important to target your audience is a smart way than to create a complex video.
One of the main ways you can take advantage of this feature is by creating a channel trailer. A channel trailer is the video version of your description and is shown to all your unsubscribed viewers. Your trailer should be short and sweet (around 30 to 60 seconds). Focus on showing visitors what your channel is about, what they can expect to see, and encourage them to subscribe. Your trailer won’t be interrupted by ads, keeping the user focused on why they should watch more videos from your brand.
After you upload your channel icon and art, add a channel description, a company email, and links to your company website and other social platforms in the About section. Your description should provide more information on your company and explain what type of video content you plan on sharing. Search engines look at your description when determining how to rank your profile so incorporate relevant keywords in your overview. We’ll talk more about how to optimize your YouTube channel description below.
The two exceptions here are 1) if you’ve built up a large subscriber base who you know will happily wait through the ads for your content, and 2) if your business is becoming semi-famous on YouTube. Still, for the latter, wait until you have at least 5-10 thousand subscribers before enabling ads.
To make a direct sale – There’s absolutely no reason you shouldn’t present a CALL-TO-ACTION in your video and provide a link that goes directly to an order form. We’re actually shocked to see how few people actually do this!
First, head to youtube.com/analytics. You should be directed to an analytics dashboard that shows an overview of how your videos have been performing during the past 28 days. You can adjust the analytics timeframe by clicking on the drop-down menu in the upper right-hand corner. The overview report features some top-line performance metrics, engagement metrics, demographics, traffic sources, and popular content.
The most obvious thing you can do is network with fellow YouTubers since you already know they’re comfortable on camera. Because video comments and responses are so important, you may consider responding to one of their videos first before asking for the return favor.
Video can also provide social proof for your product or service. According to WebDam, customer testimonials have the highest effectiveness rating for content marketing at 89%. When creating video success stories focus on the story of your customer and the success he/she achieved from using your product/service. This nifty question template from Copyblogger will help you create awesome and human-focused video and written testimonials.
But this video of a firefighter saving a kitten from a fire doesn’t have any of that. So why did GoPro chose to cut and polish this video for their own marketing? It helps them appeal to a wider audience outside the realm of extreme sports. It’s still a unique and inspiring video like many of their others, and the “everyday heroism” theme is intact, but it goes beyond the brand’s typical athlete persona.
If you want to put your iPhone’s shooting capabilities to the test, first make sure it has enough storage. Then, remember to enable your iPhone’s Do Not Disturb feature to avoid distracting notifications while filming.
The key to a successful marketing campaign, even on YouTube, is creating clear and concise calls to action. Depending on the message, you can use the beginning, middle, or end of a video to direct the actions of your viewers.
For both the project folders and your editing files, follow a consistent naming structure. For example, you could start each name using YRMODA (year-month-date). So a video on Instagram Hacks might be named “170625_instagram_hacks” if it was started on June 25, 2017.

After creating a strategy and developing your message, you should select a production company to make your vision come to life. A well-made video is the cream of the crop, and will rise to the top of the massive amounts of video available online today.
When you’re editing your profile, you’ll see the option “For Returning Subscribers.” If you click on this, you’ll see the option to add featured content. This is how you add the featured video. Do the same for “new users,” and upload the video as a channel trailer.
Now that your YouTube channel is up and running, let’s talk about search. Remember how we mentioned that YouTube is the second largest search engine? While creating engaging content is a must, it’s not the only factor for success. There are several things you can do to optimize your videos to rank highly on both YouTube and in Google search results.
Start with photos: You may not have aspirations to be a professional photographer, but by switching your camera off video mode, you’ll be able to see the relationship between aperture, ISO, and shutter speed a lot faster. Take a ton of photos and change each setting incrementally. Over time, the numbers will be less intimidating and switching between settings will become muscle memory.
Consistently updating your channel with content will keep your channel feed active, increase your presence on YouTube, and help you build an audience. You should aim for a minimum of one video per week, but the right amount of content depends on your audience, your goals, and your content.
YouTube uses a cost per view (CPV) model, which means you only pay when someone engages with your video ad. If your ad is skipped, you aren’t charged for that view. The exact cost per click varies varies on keyword competitiveness but on average it’s around $0.06. Once you set your daily campaign budget, YouTube will display your ad until the daily budget is spent.
To create a TrueView video campaign with only one ad format, follow the first set of instructions below. To create a TrueView campaign with several ad formats, continue to the second set of instructions below to create an additional ad group.

There has been an overhaul in ad content lately, due to controversy when ads were being shown on videos that contained extremism, hate speech, and other content businesses did not want to be associated with. Now, channels of arms dealers, political commentators, and even video games have seen fewer ads on their content. This only really affects those who are trying to monetize their YouTube by placing ads on their site, not so much for those running the ads.
