Overlay In-Video Ads – These types of ads are very similar to AdWords text ads, as the headline and description lines are the same number of characters, but they appear in YouTube videos. These types of ads are not truly video ads, and they only are shown in videos.
During the shoot, your job goes beyond pressing record. First and foremost, you need to be a coach. Balance critical feedback with support and be quick to give encouragement after each take. This is why conducting a table read during the scripting process is so important: It’s easier to give feedback when there’s not a camera in the room. Remember, be a little silly during the shoot or your talent will be on edge and uncomfortable — and it will show in the footage.
iMovie is Apple’s video editing software. Compatible with Macs and other iOS devices, iMovie is simple, user-friendly, and free on all Apple products. iMovie allows you to create and edit your videos by cutting together clips, adding titles, music, sound effects, basic color correction, filters, and special effects. The program even provides helpful templates that make editing a breeze. The platform supports high quality clips like 4K video footage and makes it easy to share your work directly to a video hosting platform. While a lack of access to advanced color correction and editing features mean that it isn’t commonly used by professionals, iMovie is a great option if you’re just starting out.

Technology moves waaaay too fast. Like another commenter said, this book is great if you want to learn about the history of YouTube. But it’s 2017 & I’m reading about camcorders? The common denominator? The folks in these videos use technology to help people and make the world a better and more interesting place. By providing viewers with an inspirational look at how technology is changing our experiences, they were able to drum up interest in a way that a traditional, product-centric advertisement couldn’t.
If your video involves complex movement and editing, you need to storyboard to organize your thoughts. Yes, it takes more time, but it’s a lot less complicated than getting to your set and trying to figure everything out on the spot. One of the major signs of a rookie video maker is someone who is not able to visually communicate the story. Be sure to have an idea of how your story will flow before you start filming, otherwise you risk losing your audience.
Plus, if you run these custom audiences separately, you can adjust your bidding strategy as well. Doing this can be important in terms of recapturing lapsed customers or in capturing a bigger share of wallet for important customers.
Last in the Exposure Triangle is ISO. In digital photography and videography, ISO measures the camera sensor’s sensitivity to light. On your camera, you’ll see the settings referred to with numbers in the hundreds or thousands (e.g. 200, 400, 800, 1600, etc).
Although YouTube offers the benefit of reaching a large audience with no cost to upload and host videos, there are several downsides to the platform. While video ads can be a great tool for promoting your own content, the amount of ads on the platform from other advertisers can detract from your viewer’s experience. YouTube is also — surprise — highly addicting. Once viewers are on the platform, they usually stick around to watch another video … or 20. This can make it difficult to drive traffic back to your site from the platform. Despite these barriers, YouTube is a great platform for hosting videos and growing your audience.
The year of 2018 is also set to be the year that even more small players in the online business world will be getting into video and dominating the scene. We’ve already seen examples of this with brands like Dollar Shave Club, which invested in a video campaign and, according to a New York Times interview with the founder, received 12,000 new orders in the first 48 hours of the video’s launch. That one campaign turned this little-known subscription service into an internet darling with a big following almost overnight.
Ultimately, none of what we’ve discussed so far matters much if your videos suck. Whether the content is bad or they just aren’t actionable, videos that are incapable of driving results just waste your time and money. When creating videos for YouTube, focus on specific goals. For many businesses, that will be lead generation and sales.
Tell them what’s in it for them – Immediately after your brief intro, you need to explain 2 things: WHY they should watch AND how long the video is going to run (most people don’t like open-ended commitments).
‘Shackleton’s Return’ by Hyundai is a remarkable example of great storytelling. So, maybe we shouldn’t be surprised that the video campaign has already generated over 100 million video views for the automotive brand….
In the first video at the beginning of this article, I discuss how the call to action in a video is a powerful motivator for viewers. The statistics show that audiences are much more likely to take action after watching a video, rather than after reading text.
Before you start implementing your YouTube marketing plan, you should decide who on your team will need access to the account. Granting access to team members will allow them to help manage the channel through their own Google accounts.
Think about tying your marketing to a larger mission to cultivate a loyal following. According to research conducted by Scott Magids, Alan Zorfas, and Daniel Leemon, customers who are “fully connected” emotionally to a brand spend twice as much on average than customers categorized as “highly satisfied.” Take advantage of this by committing to emotionally-charged marketing that makes customers feel recognized and important.
The part in italics is what will show as the title on YouTube. You see that I leave a cliffhanger that will make people want to click. I also put in the keywords search engine optimization and SEO in there to make it clear what the video is about. I’d then put the Google logo in the thumbnail to catch the eye and make sure people know it’s about Google SEO.
To mask jump cuts, you can also shoot with two cameras, especially if you’re recording an interview without a script. Camera A would be the traditional, straight-on shot. Camera B should be angled 30 to 45 degrees to the side and capture a distinctly different shot. The editor could then flip between these two views to make the cut appear natural.
Media publishers and content rights holders create social videos from TV, live video feeds and pre-recorded content in order to generate engagement on social platforms and drive media distribution. Possibly the best way to improve the look of your video is to include b-roll. B-roll is the supplementary footage included as a cutaway. This might include shots of a customer service rep talking on a phone, a designer editing your website, visuals of your office, or even screenshots of your product. The key with b-roll is to make sure each and every piece helps to enhance the story.
If you set up your camera at a reasonable distance from your subject, you’ll quickly learn that the internal microphone isn’t powerful enough to adequately record audio. Instead, you should begin investing in a few pieces of quality sound equipment.
TrueView In-Display Video Ads – These videos are promoted next to the YouTube videos, but your video does not play automatically. Google only charges your AdWords account when people click on the thumbnail of the video and start to watch it.
I firmly believe that every business should optimize their channel before they even post the first video. If you already have your channel up and running, though, it’s never too late to make some edits.
In fact, in the last few years Cisco was scrambling to re-engineer its routers to deal with what they call the “video onslaught”. By 2017 at least 78% of all internet traffic was video. More than half of all web traffic after 5PM is ALREADY video traffic — YouTube, Netflix, and other companies serving as prime video platforms.
Second, video editing programs are very particular about where you keep your files. We’ll cover software options more in the next section, but for now know that if you don’t stick with the original file structure, you may find yourself buried in error messages.
The average human lives for 25,915 days — and Reebok wants us to use those days to continuously honor and push our bodies to their physical limits. Their video promoting the #HonorYourDays campaign doesn’t contain any spoken words, but the message is powerful: Make the most of the days you have by, as they put it, “honoring the body you’ve been given.”
For example, Google’s keyword tool returns 49,500 global monthly searches for the phrase “landing pages”, while YouTube’s states “Not Enough Data”. The term “make money online”, however, returns 368,000 and 20,000 respectively. Therefore, look at both places and try to find the middle ground between them.
Post-production: After all of your footage is shot, it’s time to put it all together. This is the part where most people just aren’t willing to put in the time, probably because editing a video is very hard work.

When I’m asked “Should I monetize my channel?” by a client, I always ask “do you mean monetize like show ads and try to get paid?” For most businesses, I do not recommend that course of action. I have a few good reasons why.
