360 videos: The use of omnidirectional cameras got its start in 2014, but only recently have marketers begun to grasp the potential here. Still, case studies conducted by magnifyre and Google suggest that people engage more with 360-degree video as compared to standard video, so keep an eye on this trend to explode this year. It allows you to give your viewers a sense of immersive space, and the tech to create these videos gets cheaper by the day.
One of the most effective ways to generate more views for your channel is to promote your videos outside of YouTube, i.e. use your blog and social media channels. There’s a variety of WordPress themes that aim to do exactly that: promote your YouTube channel prominently on-site.
Finally, mark your good clips. Even if you’re recording a scripted video, you might have to record each section 10 or more times. If you accidently say a line different than what the script prescribes, think about why and consider changing the language to make it sound more natural.
As a producer, your job is to get plenty of b-roll to make sure your editor is never in the position of running out. Create a shot list of more b-roll ideas than you think you’d need, and mark them off as you record them.
If you choose a DSLR, there are a few settings you need to understand before your first shoot: frame rate, shutter speed, ISO, aperture, and color balance. Definitely keep your camera nearby as you read — manual settings can seem quite abstract without testing them for yourself.

Facebook and other platforms let you create custom audiences based on their behaviors, which allows you to retarget based on behaviors.
If you’re up for a challenge, trying telling a story with your b-roll and plan out a shot sequence. For example, your subject might open a door from the hallway, walk into their office space, sit down at their desk, open their laptop, and begin typing. Seems simple, right? But a shot sequence showing this 10 second scenario might consist of six or more different b-roll clips. 
So let’s talk about metrics so you can better understand how you’ll measure your success and set goals. When you post a video, it’s easy to get obsessed with one metric — view count. There will be two images that you choose. The first will be your account’s picture, which will work similar to Facebook’s profile pictures. Finally, mark your good clips. Even if you’re recording a scripted video, you might have to record each section 10 or more times. Once your subject nails the take, wave your hand in front of the lens. That way, the editor can scrub directly to this visual cue and save a lot of time while reviewing the footage.

Your video thumbnail will be the main image viewers see when scrolling through a list of video results, and it can have a large impact of the amount of clicks to and views your video receives. YouTube will auto-generate a few thumbnail options for your video, but we highly recommend uploading a custom thumbnail. YouTube reports that “90% of the best performing videos on YouTube have custom thumbnails.” When filming, think of high-quality shots that accurately represent your video. YouTube recommends using a 1280 x 720 px image to ensure that your thumbnail looks great on all screen sizes. 
Although this video is about a man who adopts and raises a puppy, it’s not meant to be inspiring — it’s meant to be entertaining. And entertaining it is: BuzzFeed did a great job writing a script that takes all the classic puppy stories you’ve heard (puppy chewing on the furniture; puppy keeping you up all night) and turns them into a delightful story of a man and his dog spending time together.
In addition, it’s really important that you track all of the leads you get from YouTube – because they’re educated about your product. And an informed lead is worth roughly 10 times the value of an uneducated lead.

Possibly the best way to improve the look of your video is to include b-roll. B-roll is the supplementary footage included as a cutaway. This might include shots of a customer service rep talking on a phone, a designer editing your website, visuals of your office, or even screenshots of your product. The key with b-roll is to make sure each and every piece helps to enhance the story.
When thinking of your goals, be sure to keep your buyer persona and target audience in mind. How old are they? Where do they live? What are their interests? How do they typically consume media? What stage of the buyer’s journey are they in? All of these questions can help determine what type of video you should make and where you should post it. For example, if your target audience is not familiar with your company, you probably want to make a video that focuses on brand awareness before producing an in-depth, product video. You’ll also want to host your video on a site that already has a large reach like YouTube.

I’m even lumping in my own impatience online here; as a user, if I click to watch a tutorial, an ad pops up, and I see a similar tutorial in the “You May Also Like This” feed, I’ll give that one a shot instead. I’m not kidding. I’ve done this twice today. You don’t want to do anything that will cause viewers to lose interest in your video, or worse, to click to a competitor’s video instead.
Watch time reports the total number of minutes your audience has spent viewing your content on your channel as a whole and by video. This helps you see what pieces of content viewers are actually consuming instead of just clicking on and navigating away. Watch time is important because it’s one of YouTube’s ranking factors. A video with a higher watch time is more likely to rank higher in results. YouTube provides a line item report on watch time, views, average view duration, and average percentage viewed for individual videos, location, publish date, and more. A video’s average percentage viewed, or retention rate, indicates the average percentage of a video your audience watches per view. A higher percentage means there’s a higher chance that your audience will watch that video until the end. Try placing cards and end screens in videos with a higher average percentage viewed rate to improve the number of views your calls-to-action receive.
Second, it gives you the ability to connect to the viewer’s emotions, which helps users connect with your brand in a meaningful way. You can create videos with very specific intent, targeting specific audiences and getting specific reactions, in mere seconds.

This blog post is not going to get into the weeds of how to upload a profile picture, cover image, or the steps to upload a video. YouTube already has those steps. It’s easy and you don’t need any instructions from me. I’m going to use this first part of the guide to talk about why you need a great channel layout.
You don’t have to choose between a catchy video title and a keyword-laden one, for what it’s worth. Plenty of great videos (that rank really well) use the strategy of choosing a catchy title, and then adding a colon and placing the keyword title afterwards. An example can be seen here:

Social videos tends to be passed along because of a shared interest or a sense of trust between sender and recipient(s). Social videos attract conversation in either a one-to-one or a one-many relationship, with the comments and interactions becoming cumulative, rather than moving in a one-way trajectory, as in the case of a viral video.
Although it might strike some as a bid morbid, the copy is in keeping with the brand’s “tough fitness” theme. Click the CTA, and you’ll get taken to a campaign website where people can share photos showing how they’re honoring their bodies, along with their “number.” Pretty cool.

Unlike other social networking platforms, YouTube exclusively hosts video content. If you’re only creating a YouTube channel to upload one video and have no intention of maintaining the platform, you might want to reconsider. You’ll need to set aside plenty of time to plan, film, edit, market, and analyze content on a consistent basis. You’ll need to define your brand’s goals and plan for how video specifically can help you achieve these. However, if you devote an appropriate amount of time and energy into the platform, you’ll be able to create engaging, shareable content for your growing audience.
Instead, place a laptop below the eyeline of the camera. Break the script into short paragraphs and record it section by section until you capture a great take of each. If you plan in advance when the final video will show b-roll (supplementary footage or screenshots), you can have your talent read those lines directly off the laptop like a voiceover.
Plus, if you run these custom audiences separately, you can adjust your bidding strategy as well. Doing this can be important in terms of recapturing lapsed customers or in capturing a bigger share of wallet for important customers.
Engagement reports help you learn what content is resonating with your audience. Here you can see what viewers are clicking, sharing, commenting, and promoting. You can also see how your cards and end screens are performing in your engagement reports. Cards and end screens reports help you learn what your audience is engaging with so you can optimize your calls-to-action in future videos.
Don’t make the assumption that because 10,000 people are searching for a particular keyphrase through Google, that they’re going to be searching for it in YouTube as well. Remember, most people are going to YouTube for entertainment or very specific types of tutorials, whereas Google can be used to search for anything under the sun.
If you’re up for a challenge, trying telling a story with your b-roll and plan out a shot sequence. For example, your subject might open a door from the hallway, walk into their office space, sit down at their desk, open their laptop, and begin typing. Seems simple, right? But a shot sequence showing this 10 second scenario might consist of six or more different b-roll clips. 
Finally, choose your video thumbnail once the video uploads. You can choose one that YouTube has suggested, or upload your own custom thumbnail. I almost always recommend uploading a custom thumbnail that contains some element of branding.

The most obvious thing you can do is network with fellow YouTubers since you already know they’re comfortable on camera. Because video comments and responses are so important, you may consider responding to one of their videos first before asking for the return favor.

Second, video editing programs are very particular about where you keep your files. We’ll cover software options more in the next section, but for now know that if you don’t stick with the original file structure, you may find yourself buried in error messages. 
The exact settings on your camera will depend on the model you have, but there’s likely an auto option, a bunch of presets (daylight, cloudy, tungsten, etc.), and custom. Avoid auto white balance at all costs and instead opt for a preset or custom. If you have a top-of-the-line DSLR, there may also be an option to manually set the color temperature of the room, measured in Kelvin.
The first is that viewer attention spans- and loyalty- are a bitch. I’m even lumping in my own impatience online here; as a user, if I click to watch a tutorial, an ad pops up, and I see a similar tutorial in the “You May Also Like This” feed, I’ll give that one a shot instead. I’m not kidding. I’ve done this twice today. You don’t want to do anything that will cause viewers to lose interest in your video, or worse, to click to a competitor’s video instead.

Social media platforms that are more fluid, such as Twitter and Facebook, make it easier to share content, but that content is often very short-lived. That means that these platforms are often better for short-form and live video, or for content that you’ll pay to promote.
After all that prep work, it’s finally time to start filming your video. Don’t own a fancy camera or have budget to rent one? Don’t worry! Advances in smartphone cameras have made it possible to film great content with just a phone. If you are filming your video with a phone, be sure to turn it sideways and film in landscape mode. This will prevent awkward cropping or framing when you upload the video to YouTube, which natively supports the landscape format. No matter what you’re filming with, these tips can help your video to look professional and stay engaging for your viewers.

Ad groups will each be assigned a format (either in-stream or video discovery for TrueView campaigns), and can contain only ads of that same format. For example, an in-stream ad group can contain only in-stream video ads and their associated targeting criteria and bids. Likewise, a video discovery ad group can contain only video discovery ads and their associated targeting criteria and bids.
To mask jump cuts, you can also shoot with two cameras, especially if you’re recording an interview without a script. Camera A would be the traditional, straight-on shot. Camera B should be angled 30 to 45 degrees to the side and capture a distinctly different shot. The editor could then flip between these two views to make the cut appear natural.
Forums, chat boards, social media, and blogs are all examples of places where you can boost your video to increase viral chances. Sending news tips to notable blogs, newspapers, or magazines are also a good way to get the video viral. But none of this will even work if your content is not good.
Your videos should work the same way. Even if they aren’t ads, you should treat it them as such. Hook the viewer in with visuals and a few great opening lines. Then keep them entertained. Watch what I do in this video:

You can also filter your results by content, device type, geography or location, all video content or playlists, subscriber status, playback type, traffic by different YouTube products, and translations. In addition to filtering results, YouTube allows you to display your results in a variety of different charts and even an interactive map.
In fact, in the last few years Cisco was scrambling to re-engineer its routers to deal with what they call the “video onslaught”. By 2017 at least 78% of all internet traffic was video. More than half of all web traffic after 5PM is ALREADY video traffic — YouTube, Netflix, and other companies serving as prime video platforms.
For both the project folders and your editing files, follow a consistent naming structure. For example, you could start each name using YRMODA (year-month-date). So a video on Instagram Hacks might be named “170625_instagram_hacks” if it was started on June 25, 2017.
Also, don’t forget to include a link to your desired call to action as high up in the description. If you want people to share the video, use a service called ClicktoTweet.com. If you want people to opt into a mailing list, insert a link to the landing page you want them to go to. It’s as simple as that.

Last year, Facebook announced that its video viewership doubled from 4 billion views per day to 8 billion views per day in a period of seven months. This staggering growth of video viewership highlights the immense potential of videos for bringing in advertising dollars, keeping viewers engaged and increasing viewership. Facebook launched its picture in picture viewing last year, which lets users watch video while browsing the news feed. Facebook is also testing a dedicated video feed stream to let viewers only watch videos shared by their network. Facebook is pushing the envelope to create more video infrastructure, and so are marketers to take advantage of its potential.
Media publishers and content rights holders create social videos from TV, live video feeds and pre-recorded content in order to generate engagement on social platforms and drive media distribution.[1] They use real-time video editing software to instantly create and share social videos in native formats such as vertical video for Snapchat and square video for Instagram.
Possibly the best way to improve the look of your video is to include b-roll. B-roll is the supplementary footage included as a cutaway. This might include shots of a customer service rep talking on a phone, a designer editing your website, visuals of your office, or even screenshots of your product. The key with b-roll is to make sure each and every piece helps to enhance the story.
When writing your description, you can try to optimize for the top keywords, but also additional keywords that you think could be helpful. In the video above, you can see that the description has keywords like “rainbow unicorn cake” and “classic rainbow cake.” Both of these may be search terms, and they have their bases covered.
In-stream ads refer to ads that play within a YouTube video itself. TrueView in-stream ads play before a viewer watches the video they’ve selected on YouTube. These ads can be customized with different overlay text and CTAs and viewers usually have the option to skip the ad after watching the first five seconds. In addition to the pre-roll in-stream ads that play before the video, there are also mid-roll video ads that appear midway through YouTube videos that are 10 minutes or longer.
Video poses some unique challenges for your computer and file organization habits. And if you’re one of those people who work off a cluttered desktop — you know who you are — you’ll find yourself in a world of hurt. 
For instance, as the person behind the camera, you may believe you collect ample footage and ask all the right interview questions. But to the editor, you may actually be shooting too much of one type of shot and missing out on some that would make their job a lot easier.
But what does shutter speed mean for video? We won’t go too deep into the science of shutter speed, but to pick the adequate setting you will have to do a little math. First, multiply your frame rate by 2. So if you’re shooting in 24fps, that would be 48. This number becomes the denominator of your shutter speed fraction. Since shutter speed is only available in a few increments, you’ll need to round 1/48 up to the next closest setting: 1/50.
Find out how people are using your product or service to better their lives, and share their inspiring stories with the world through video. They’ll do a much better job of advocating for your product or service’s value than a piece of purely fact-based marketing content ever could.
With more than a billion active users, YouTube is not just the place for funny videos anymore. Video drives a 157% increase in organic traffic from search engines. YouTube is a serious marketing platform that provides your brand with the opportunity to promote content in a truly visual way.
The last step here is particularly crucial: the targeting section of the campaign creation. You can target based on location, gender, age group, their web activity, and interests. Take all of these into consideration; interest targeting is perhaps even more important here than it is on Facebook Ads.
Once your script feels ready to go, there’s one more step before you break out your camera: the table read. Words on paper can sound a lot different than they do out loud. The point of a table read is to smooth out the kinks of the script and nail down inflection points. Have a few people (writer and talent included) gather around a table with their laptops and read the script multiple times through. If you accidently say a line different than what the script prescribes, think about why and consider changing the language to make it sound more natural.
No matter if it’s your first video or your fiftieth, remember that getting in front of the camera is scary. Schedule plenty of time and give your talent the script early — but make it clear they don’t need to memorize it. 
One simple way to create a steady stream of content is to produce shorter versions of long-form content. Build a theme around a topic and then post bite-size versions of the theme on a weekly basis. This will keep your audience engaged and coming back for more.
To add subtitles or closed captions, head to your video manager then click on “Videos under “Video Manager.” Find the video you want to add subtitles or closed captioning to and click the drop-down arrow next to the edit button. Then choose “Subtitles/CC.” You can then choose how you’d like to add subtitles or closed captioning.
This doesn’t mean that you need a huge following on YouTube already. Gregory Ciotti has a great post on Think Traffic about how he worked with another YouTube channel to create a video based on a popular blog post he wrote – Science of Productivity.
Even the simplest of videos can be super shareable with the right subject matter. In this case, that subject matter is animals, which the folks at Android used to focus on shared experiences. By tapping into viewers’ emotions, the video has built-in broad appeal and sharability.
YouTube is one of the largest, most visited websites in the world. Fortunately, and it’s also one of the easiest places to get massive amounts of traffic with minimal effort. By utilizing these best practices, you can now create engaging videos, dominate SEO, and send your videos surging up the search rankings on both YouTube and Google.
YouTube will only show the first two to three lines (about 100 characters) of your video’s description, then viewers will need to click “show more” to see the rest. For that reason, be sure to include any important links or CTAs in the beginning of your description, and write the copy so it drives views and engagement. Below this, you can include the video transcript. Video transcripts can greatly improve your SEO because your video is usually full of keywords. You can also add a default channel description that includes links to your social channels, video credits, and video specific time stamps. You can also include #hashtags in your video titles and descriptions — just be sure to use them sparingly.

To make a direct sale – There’s absolutely no reason you shouldn’t present a CALL-TO-ACTION in your video and provide a link that goes directly to an order form. We’re actually shocked to see how few people actually do this!
As it does, you can enter in the video’s basic information, including its name, the video description, the privacy settings, and which playlist you’d like it to appear on. You should also add tags, which helps the video show up in relevant searches. You’ll want to make sure that the video’s text is optimized for SEO; we’ll go over this in the next section.
Speaking of concise language, most video scripts are short. In fact, probably shorter than you think. Keep a script timer handy to check your approximate length as you write and edit. For example, a 350-word script equates to a video that is nearly 2 minutes long.

To solve this problem, lock the exposure while you’re filming before you press record. Hold your finger down on the subject of the video until a yellow box appears with the words “AE/AF Lock.”
